Solo Exhibition re: materiality at hakari contemporary, Kyoto

SEPTEMBER 19, 2025

Towa Takaya presents re: materiality, a solo exhibition at hakari contemporary (Kyoto), on view from 20 September to 19 October 2025. With cultural studies scholar Hiroki Yamamoto as guest curator, the exhibition investigates the materiality of color — which Takaya describes as "a substance that works within existence."

Through her practice, Takaya has consistently pursued a phenomenological exploration of color in painting. For this exhibition, she presents new works developed through methodologies that diverge from her previous series-based approach, extending her material research from the careful collection and refinement of pigments to the innovative mixing of diverse substances.

In his curatorial text, Yamamoto positions the exhibition as an attempt to reconsider materiality — a quality often marginalized within postmodernist art discourse — by attending to the painterly significance of color and form in Takaya's work.
